Owning YOU

A leader’s success in motivating others is often in direct proportion to how he or she understands themselves.  You could say this is all about You Owning YOU.

The more you understand yourself, the more you will use the passion and strengths you have, and then surround yourself with people who have strengths within your weaknesses.  Also, by understanding yourself, you have the foundation by which you can adapt your behaviour to others in order to be more effective in influencing those around you.  So you see…greater success starts with you understanding yourself.

How much time do you invest in understanding yourself?

Owning the Pace

Leaders focus their people on achievement, but also focus their people on the pace of the achievement as well.   The very best leaders get their people owning both the achievement and the pace too.

Successful leaders know that their people take more ownership on their own thoughts and actions than those given by the leaders.  With that in mind, successful leaders ask their people for the milestones which will drive the pace, versus just giving the milestones to their people.

A question for you…Will your people have more ownership in milestones you give them or milestones that they give you?  That’s right…it’s all about the milestones they give you.

Also, you get another benefit.  By asking your people for their milestones, they reveal whether they know what they are doing.  Why?…Because if they give you milestones that don’t link well to other initiatives in the business, then they are either not well connected within the organisation or they haven’t thought through what they are doing in enough details.

Get your people to own both the Achievement and the Pace.

Owning your Communication

When most people think about their communications, they are thinking about what they are going to write in that email or what they are going to say to others.  However, is that the real outcome of communication?  Not really, as what you say or write is just an action, it is not really the outcome (achievement) of the communication.

The outcome of your communications is getting others to Think, Feel and Do.

Successful communicators just don’t own what they say, but they own what others think, feel and do (the outcome or result from their communications).  Again, it is the difference between owning actions (say and write) versus achievement (getting others to think, feel and do something).

Your power of influence will increase dramatically when your communications focus on getting others to think, feel and do.

Owning Achievement

Successful leaders know that action is important, but achievement is the goal.  They know that if they delegate just actions to their people, they (the leader),  will keep ownership for the outcomes those activities support.

There’s a big difference between having your people just owning actions versus outcomes.  When you get your people owning outcomes (achievement), you get them both doing whatever it takes to achieve those outcomes, and often look for better & faster ways to do it as well.

Think about this for your own leadership!

Are you delegating actions or are you delegating outcomes (achievement)?

Owning your Focus

Many people go through life not really having a focus or knowing what is important to them.  The result is the same as giving your car keys to another person, and then letting them drive you around (and not knowing where you are going).

Successful people have a focus, and know what’s important to them.  This focus then guides the choices they make in life (both in the goals they set and how they use their time in pursuit of those goals).   The successful keep the car keys of their life, and never let others drive them around. They own their focus, and you can too.

Invest the time to get clarity on what’s most important to you, and to keep that clarity.

That’s the way to Own your Focus, and remember as a leader, your focus drives the focus of your entire organisation.
